Yalis are supernatural creatures with the body of a lion and the head of an elephant or horse. This particular yali has the head of a lion (simhavyala) whose roar – here symbolically represented – frightens demons from the temple.
Yali belief dates to pre-Vedic indigenous animist beliefs and one of the many temple decorations inspired by nature.
